British Values
British Values at Edleston Primary School
In accordance with The Department for Education at Edleston, we aim to actively promote British Values in our school to ensure that our pupils leave Edleston prepared for life in modern Britain. At our school, students encounter these principles throughout everyday school life.
At Edleston, we take the opportunity to actively promote British Values through whole school assemblies where a range of British Values are explored. Our whole school systems and structures lend themselves to the active promotion of British Values. For example, all children take part in a democratic school council election process and elected children run a school council which plays an integral role in the community of our school.
Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
The Key Values are:
- democracy
- rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect
- tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
We help children to remember the British Values through the thumb and finger model
Thumb – Democracy – up or down to give opinion.
Index finger – Rule of Law - pointing
Middle finger – Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs – tallest finger pointing to God.
Ring Finger – Mutual respect – wedding ring – respect for other people
Little finger – Individual Liberty – sticks out on its own.
What does ‘British Values’ mean to us?
- We respect the cultures and beliefs of others
- We know that we are all special
- We understand and respect the roles of people who help us
- We understand the consequences of our actions
- We treat everybody equally
- We understand right from wrong
- We listen to and respect other people’s opinions and values
- We always try to help other people
At Edleston we would actively challenge children, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
We value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these. We have found this approach to be enriching for all parties as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world. Underpinning all of this, are a range of curriculum topics which have strong links to the British Values.
We promote British Values in the following ways:
We uphold and promote the value of Democracy:
We understand the role of the Rule of Law:
We understand what is meant by Individual Liberty:
Our school and a fair society is built on the foundation of Mutual Respect:
We promote tolerance towards those of all different faiths and beliefs:
